Suspended center drive concentrator: an efficient solution for solid-liquid separation


In industrial production, solid-liquid separation is an indispensable link to achieve resource recovery, wastewater treatment and environmental protection standards. As a classic solid-liquid separation equipment, the suspended central drive concentrator is widely used in mining, metallurgy, chemical industry, environmental protection and other fields with its advantages of compact structure, stable operation and easy maintenance. It has become one of the core equipment for processing tailings, sludge and suspension.


1. Basic definition and structural composition
The suspended central drive concentrator is a device that uses the principle of gravity settlement to achieve solid-liquid separation. Its core feature is that the driving device is located above the center of the concentration tank, and the suspended solid particles settled at the bottom of the tank are scraped and collected to the central mud outlet through the suspended mud scraper mechanism. The main structure includes the following parts:

1. Central drive device: It consists of a motor, a reducer (such as a cycloid reducer or a planetary reducer), and a transmission shaft. It provides rotational power for the mud scraping mechanism. The driving device is installed on the platform at the center of the pool top, with compact structure and high transmission efficiency.  
2. Suspended mud scraping mechanism: consists of scraping arm, scraper and connecting parts. The scraper arm is suspended in the pool through the transmission shaft and rotates with the transmission shaft; the scraper is made of wear-resistant material (such as rubber or stainless steel), close to the bottom of the pool, and scrapes the settled solid particles to the central mud hopper.  
3. Thickener: A circular structure, usually made of reinforced concrete or steel, used to contain the suspension to be treated. The depth of the pool is designed according to the processing capacity and settlement requirements, and the diameter ranges from several meters to tens of meters.  
4. Overflow system: The annular overflow tank is located at the edge of the pool and is used to collect the clarified supernatant to ensure that the liquid overflows evenly and avoids carrying solid particles.  
5. Sludge discharge device: The central sludge discharge bucket is connected to an underflow pump or a sludge discharge valve to discharge the concentrated high-concentration underflow and transport it to subsequent processing links (such as dehydrators or storage sites).  


2. Working principle
The working process of the suspended center drive concentrator is based on the combination of gravity sedimentation and mechanical scraping:
1. Feeding and settling: The suspension to be treated enters the concentration tank through the central feeding pipe and spreads around. Under the action of gravity, the solid particles gradually settle to the bottom of the tank to form a sludge layer; the upper liquid gradually becomes clarified.  
2. Sludge scraping and sludge discharge: The central drive device drives the sludge scraper arm to rotate, and the scraper scrapes the sludge at the bottom of the pool to the central sludge discharge hopper and discharges it through the underflow pump. At the same time, the supernatant liquid flows out through the overflow tank to complete solid-liquid separation.  
3. Auxiliary strengthening: In order to improve the sedimentation efficiency, flocculant can be added before feeding, so that the tiny particles can aggregate into large flocs, accelerate the sedimentation process, and improve the concentration effect.

Compared with other types of equipment such as peripheral drive concentrators, suspended central drive concentrators have the following significant advantages:
- Compact structure: The driving device is concentrated in the center, eliminating the need for peripheral tracks and running mechanisms. It occupies a small area and is suitable for sites with limited space.  
- Stable operation: The central transmission method reduces mechanical wear, low failure rate and long operating life. The hanging scraper has strong adaptability to the bottom of the pool, is not easy to scratch the bottom of the pool, and has low maintenance costs.  
- High efficiency and energy saving: The transmission efficiency is high and the energy consumption is lower than that of peripheral transmission equipment; by optimizing the scraper angle and speed, uniform scraping of sludge can be achieved and sludge accumulation can be avoided.  
- Flexible processing: The size of the tank can be adjusted according to the processing volume to adapt to suspensions of different concentrations; after adding flocculant, the underflow concentration can be significantly increased (usually up to 50%~70%).  


4. Application areas
Suspended center drive concentrators have a wide range of application scenarios. Typical fields include:
- Mining industry: It processes tailings slurry such as gold mine, copper mine, iron ore, etc. After concentration, the underflow can be transported to the tailings storage for storage, and the supernatant liquid is recycled to reduce water consumption.  
- Metallurgical industry: Treat steel plant wastewater and non-ferrous metal smelting sludge to achieve wastewater discharge standards and sludge resource utilization.  
- Chemical industry: Treat phosphogypsum slurry and suspension in fertilizer production, recover useful components, and reduce solid waste emissions.  
- Environmental protection field: Sludge concentration in urban sewage treatment plants provides high-concentration sludge for subsequent dehydration processes (such as plate and frame filter press), reducing dehydration costs.  


5. Maintenance and development trends
Daily maintenance points
- Regularly check the lubrication of the drive device and replace the lubricating oil and seals;
- Check the degree of scraper wear and adjust the scraper gap in time to ensure the mud scraping effect;
- Clean up debris in the overflow tank to prevent clogging;
- Monitor the bottom flow concentration and flow rate, adjust the mud discharge frequency, and avoid mud accumulation at the bottom of the pool.

- Large-scale: With the expansion of industrial scale, large-scale concentrators with a diameter of more than 50 meters have gradually become popular to meet the needs of high processing capacity;
- Automation: Use PLC control system to realize automatic detection of liquid level and concentration, remotely monitor the operating status of equipment, and reduce labor costs;
- Intelligent: Combined with Internet of Things technology to achieve fault warning and predictive maintenance (predictive maintenance) to improve equipment reliability;
- High efficiency: Integrating deep cone concentration technology and high-efficiency flocculant to further improve sedimentation efficiency and underflow concentration.
